Developing Interagency Transportation Agreements for Students in Foster Care
Many students in foster care experience high levels of mobility, exceeding the levels of home and school instability of their peers. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires that Local Education Agencies (LEAs) receiving Title I, Part A funds collaborate with child welfare agencies (CWAs) to establish formal, clearly written procedures for providing, arranging, and funding transportation to maintain students in foster care in their school of origin when in their best interest. To support districts in their development and implementation of the transportation procedures, we invited staff from both agencies to a webinar. In partnership with the Department for the Community Based Services, KDE hosted a webinar at 10:00 a.m. EST July 28th that:
- Reviewed requirements for providing transportation for a child in foster care to his or her school of origin;
- Discussed transportation procedures required under ESSA;
- Shared resources and more.
